  • The brave fireman hanging upside down from the manhole was my great grandfather Jack Wilkins.

  • I was a friend of Raymond Wilson, (Kevin’s elder brother) and was nearby when this accident occurred. The fire service was called by Kevin’s mother and they arrived within some 10 minutes. Kevin was rescued by a brave fireman who was hanging upside down from a manhole – held by two colleagues. He spotted an upstretched arm, and which he grabbed, and then and the pair were hauled up to safety. Kevin was given first aid and taken by ambulance to hospital and later discharged once he had been treated. His mum and dad owned a corner shop, which sold confectionary at once counter, and tripe and pigs trotters at another which was located at the junction of Queen Victoria Street and Mill Hill Bridge Street. These days I am 83 years of age but remember growing up in Mill Hill with fondness. One of the outstanding journalists of our time, Nancy Banks-Smith (who is still alive) lived in the Mill Hill Hotel at that time. A marvellous writer and a lovely person.
