New Chief Fire Officer Thomas Birtwistle article 1953
From: ArticlesIn June 1953 Chief Fire Officer Wilkins retired after serving with the brigade for no less than 39yrs, on the 1st of July Deputy Chief Thomas Birtwistle took over control of the brigade on his appointment as Chief Fire officer. Mr Birtwistle , a native of Oldham was foreman mechanic for Ribble motor services at Blackburn before entering the fire service at Blackpool in 1935.
He returned to Blackburn four years later as sergeant in the local brigade, but on nationalisation of the services was transferred to Barrow and afterwards served at Manchester and Broughton. near Preston headquarters.
When the local authority resumed control in 1948, Mr Birtwistle was appointed Blackburn deputy chief.
Aged 46, he was first in all England when he passed the final examination of the institute of fire engineers in 1940. thus emulating his former chief Mr Wilkins, he is married with one son
