Fire Pump St Blackburn,
From: ArticlesPicture shows Stn O Dave Bowers George Mullaney. if you are the other Firefighter please let us no through comment section below.
I recall this incident for a number of reasons. I was driver of the first pump I recall that we turned out in the early hours of the morning from the Old Ambulance House at the Old Fire Station because work was being carried out in the Stations Appliance Room,
I recall driving through the doors and commenting that it was foggy, it wasn’t fog is was smoke from the fire which was about half a mile away. On arrival it was discovered that a severe fire was involving a Engineering Workshop which contained a number of motor vehicles. If anybody can remember the name of the place please let us no and any other details would be grateful. I recall that a make pumps five and Turntable ladder was requested. I recall that Blackburns Turntable Ladder was off the run and the next nearest being Preston, I bet that was a bit of a shock to the Preston Crew who thought they were in for a quiet night.
I recall that during the early stages of fire fighting their was a almighty explosion which shook the ground and surrounding area, I never found out what the bang was I can only assume that it was a gas cylinder. I remember thinking that I bet that has woken all the residents who were a sleep in the nearby residential area.
Firefighters were then withdrawn and firefighting was by use of the Turntable Ladder Monitor, fortunately only one small injury occurred when Firefighter Neil Hargreaves hurt his back and required minor hospital treatment.
When I look back it could have been worse.
