Fire Richmond Hill Paper Mill
From: ArticlesThis fire occurred on Tues 26 August 1958, it as special memories for Ex Blackburn retired Stn O Dave Bowers because he lived in Watford St adjacent to the Paper Mill and at the ripe old age of 6yrs old he recalls being evacuated from his home along with his mother because of the danger to surrounding property from the fire.
Special mention was made in the local newspaper about the mills cats who survived the fire, and Capt Tribble of the Salvation Army and his Wife who made gallons of tea for the evacuated families and firefighters.
Nothing changes after all these years the Salvation Army still provide refreshments for fire crews at large incidents and I am sure are still a very welcome sight.
Photograph 3-4 are the actual hand written log when the incident actually happened. The stop message reads a Paper Mill of 4 Floors. Fire involving two upper floors 5 Branches ( Water Jets) in use. There is no mention of Turntable Ladder Monitor, I can only assume that it was included in the number of branches ( Water Jets).
The Watchroom / Control Room operator that night was Firefighter Albert Carter.
Reading the entry later on a request was made to the local Water Board to increase the mains water pressure it would indicate that there was insufficient water to fight the fire.
