Hectic two hours for Firemen
From: ArticlesBlackburn Firemen were called to three fires within two hours, in high wind and torrential rain.
No 1 Involved 40 tons of hay worth £420 in a brick Barn at Mr Tom Flemings Beardwood Fold Farm. The Barn roof fell in, Firemen had difficulty removing the burning hay and debris Hey flared up as it was taken in the open and had to be damped down. A relief crew was at work all night. About three tons of hey were destroyed.
No2 about 15mins later was caused by a chimney collapsing in the gale at Butler St , home of Mr Raymond Leaming, one of the Chimney pots went through the roof. Using a Turntable Ladder firemen battered by the wind dismantled the stack and part of the roof the chimney and sheeted up the roof.
No 3 meant removal of a newly installed fireplace at Mr James Ryan,s home 218, Brownhill Drive, to reach burning timber under the hearth. the machine which returned from the first fire No 1 was turned out once again.
