Training Course London Rd Manchester 1959

All County Borough Fire Brigades sent recruits to The City Of Manchester Fire Brigade Training Centre situated at London Rd Fire Station.

The course consisted of Twelve weeks Basic Training and did not include Breathing Apparatus, the above picture has been donated by retired Sub O 61 Jim Yates (Rowdy), who attended his course in 1959  Jim Is pictured 2nd From left back row.

Also pictured are Fm 60 Don Smithson third from left middle row and Fm 57 Keith Haydock fourth from left.

All Firefighters wore their service number on the collar of the fire tunic, and I recall that it was very rare that you were called by your name it was always by number, a little bit like the television programme The Prisoner.
