Automotive Products Fire Bolton 1979
From: ArticlesBlackburn Pump & Turntable Ladder with Red Watch firefighters attended this incident in Bolton on one sunny Sun afternoon in 1979 It was among the largest Fire I attended during my career. The building was of 6 floors and was well alight when we arrived, I recall being on Ground Monitor with a collegue Gordon Mitchell when a large section of the outer wall collapsed lower down from were we firefighting, the whole ground shook with the force of the collapse. Blackburns Turntable Ladder was operating as a Water Tower at near end of the building a further collapse trapped the vehicle with the access road becoming blocked with rubble, it was quite some time after the fire that the vehicle could be released.
One amusing moment but not at the time was when a nosey milatary pilot decided to investigate the large plume of smoke being immitted by the fire and paid us a visit at low level bearing in mind that we had just experieced the two periods of collapse, we thought the rest of the building was coming down it was in fact the noise from his engine, nice chap.
