I believe the fire was started by children playing with matches on a Sunday? I recall my father taking me to see the site after the fire. I have vivid memories of the skeletal remains of newly completed single and double decker buses despite my young age at the time (7yrs old. My father worked at East Lancs and ended up out of work due to the fire. He moved the family to Scarborough taking a job at Plaxtons a local luxury coach builders. Though a sad time for many it proved to be a good move for the family with a better income and quality of life.
