Clayton Street Fire Station 1866-1921
From: ArticlesThese photographs with history tell about the old Clayton Street fire station. This is the only fire station we have any pictures of and only those taken around the 1960’s and 1970’s, any other pictures are usually with the firemen in front, of which we do have some so please go and have a look. Incidentally the station was knocked down roughly early 1980,s and is now a car park next to john’ snooker hall.
The town council in 1865 after a large number of disastrous fires was forced to take action to improve the facilities for dealing with such outbreaks and in 1865 it was decided to build an up to date fire engine station , a site was acquired on Clayton Street and in December 1866 a contract for the work was given to Mr Henry Aspden. The work was completed and the station opened in 1867.
The station was approached through the large gates in Clayton Street which gave access to a spacious yard. Opposite was the engine house, flanked on one side by a 42 foot high hose tower and on the other side by a store room . Over the engine house was the engineers workshop and the mens recreation room. To the right of the main entrance was a small smithy, on the left the office and superintendents house and beyond stabling for the horses.
Seventeen cottages adjoined the station for the men, the remainder living at distances up to 300 yards from the station, although alterations and improvements were made to the station from time to time , the engine house itself remained substantially the same from its opening to 1921 when it was finally closed.
The brigade was then under the command of Mr Joseph Joy, a Manchester man , who in addition to his fire brigade duties , also carried out the duties of markets inspector and inspector of nuisances. He had succeeded the first superintendent , Mr William Smith , Who had held the position since 1837, retiring at the age of 71 in 1866, feeling he was perhaps getting too old for the job
