1940s photos
From: ArticlesThis time period began with Britain being at war with Germany and the heavy air attacks on England in 1941 revealed weaknesses in the fire service organisation and so on August 18th 1941, the National Fire Service was formed bringing all the regular brigades in line with the auxiliaries. Blackburn became part of No.29 Division. Chief Fire Officer Wilkins became Divisional Officer in charge of an area including Blackburn, Accrington, Darwen, Clitheroe, Great Harwood and surrounding areas.
Although Blackburn was remarkably fortunate to escape bombing attacks during the war , many of the firemen saw service in the ”blitzed areas” under the regional reinforcement schemes by which men and machines could be speedily moved to places where they were immediately needed. But by 1947 it was decided to hand back control to the local authorities again , Blackburn became a borough fire brigade once again under Chief Fire Officer Wilkins
