Turntable ladder operating at Blackburn Cinema The Victoria
From: ArticlesThese are two photos we received showing firemen operating the turntable ladder next to a cinema in Blackburn but does anyone know which cinema or who the firemen are? , if you do please let us know
The Cinema is the Victoria which was situated next to the Leeds & Liverpool Canal Bridge on Eanam , the building collapsed into a cink hole and was demolished.
It was one of the many cinemas of that time in Blackburn within a stones throw of the Victoria on Dock St was the Alexandra, Rialto Penny St, Palace Boulevard, Royal Ainsworth St, Majestic King William St, Roxy King St, Ritz Bank Top, Savoy Bolton Rd, Empire Bolton Rd, Olympia St Peter St, Central Mincing Lane, Palladium Mill Hill and Star Little Harwood. Grand Theatre Jubilee St.
I recall as a wet behind the ears young firefighter providing fire cover at the Rialto / Odeon and the Palace when they put on live shows. Believe it or not Freddy & The Dreamers at the Rialto
The Palace Cinema was massive with two Balconys the top one never used in my time because of safety reasons I recall it being called the monkey run because it was that high.
The man on the Ladder was Tom Birtwistle and the other firefighter was Len Wilkens
Bob France
A big thanks to Retired Stn Commander Norman Halliwell for identifying the two personnel on the ladder and also recalling watching the last film to be shown Bob Hopes Paleface.
