  • I totally agree with Dave these Turntable ladders were never permanently on the run at Blackburn. Starting in the 1950-1960s it was Leyland Merryweather Mechanical Ladder which was replaced 1960-1980s with a AEC Merryweather Hydraulic Ladder FCB 233B, then it was replaced 1980s-1990s with a Dennis Magirus Ladder FBV 831Y with Cage. The late 1990s Turntable Ladders were replaced by Volvo Bronto Aerial Ladder Platforms.
I recall going on duty on our first day to be asked to show one of these companies who had recently purchased on of these vehicles from a auction how to operate it. I declined because they only had a couple of hours to become operators which for Fire Service personnel would take a two week course.
Health & Safety none existent way back then.

  • I believe Warburtons were a Blackburn firm of steeplejacks, but this Bedford TTL was never a regular Blackburn Fire Station machine. It was one of 6 belonging to the old pre 1974 Lancs County Fire Brigade and was based at Stretford when I was stationed down there in 1970.
