This was a great day hundreds of people were taking part each for their own designated charities , ours was the fire service benevolent fund. Most of the then white watch took part under the management of our station officer Tom Davis. Amongst some of those I remember taking part were a group of soldiers in their army boots at the end they were in agonies with blisters , myself having a good idea for once decided to wear my walking boots very comfortable. Another team taking part were Darwen fire station wearing Breathing Apparatus only not under air just with the masks and sets on very brave . Another person of note there was the ex Chief fire officer Roy Watson who was a way mark guide. Accompanying us was the little fire engine built by us and carrying much needed refreshments for the journey. This little fire truck was to makeĀ a secondĀ appearance a bit later in another charity event the barrels push in connection with the Wetherspoon pub postal order in town go on have a look its on the site
