1960's
From: Articlescollection of articles and cuttings from this period. The 1960’s still had Chief Fire Officer Thomas Birtwistle up until his retirement in 1968 , when his deputy William Williams Took up the reigns. In the early sixties large areas of old property mostly to the south east and the town centre were cleared under a slum clearance programme which resulted in a sharp increase in the number of fire calls . Large fires continued but due to the efficiency of the crews the saved many thousands of pounds worth of damage. One large fire was at Christmas 1962 in the early hours of the morning a call was received from the Starlight club, Plane Tree Road , four appliances and a turntable ladder were in attendance but the building was already well alight and already flames were shooting through the roof. Later the same day the brigade went to the Greyhound racing stadium on Hill Street, After 1964 the fire prevention staff were increased due to a new act of parliament .Another large fire was at Donshu 1965. In December 1966 Deputy chief fire officer Morris retired after 28 yrs of service. In the same year a new Hydraulic 100 ft Turntable Ladder was delivered to replace the 1943 Merryweather which had served the brigade so well. In 1968 also the Auxiliary Fire Service was disbanded after being formed in 1949. The brigade also started using it’s own individual wireless scheme after sharing with the police
