2002 Strike Days And Nights, Green
From: ArticlesThis period of time was very unsettling for everyone concerned. A little background to the events , is that the Labour government at the time decided they wanted a group to go away and do a study on all aspects of the fire service nationally. At the end of this the man responsible gave his findings and recommendations to the government. As far as we heard the report said that the fire service was performing very well and that pay should go up as in comparison to other white collar workers the firemen were some way behind. When the government got this report they decided to just take the parts they wanted , which certainly was not an increase in pay and reductions in the fire service had to be made in order to save money . So they went away and amended the report. This was the background to the strike only the second time in the history of the service. When you look at the firemen sat around a brazier looking like they are enjoying themselves , bear it in mind that every watch went on duty everyday and night in line with their usual work routine, for nothing! yes nothing , the fire engines were ready to go to any persons reported fire that we were informed of . This practise was not well liked by our employers who later in the next strike locked all the firemen out from their stations. It was never intended to make the public suffer
