The burning down of Clayton Grange
From: ArticlesThis four pictures in this article refers to the burning down of a local mill owners house during the riots of this time. The house belonged to Colonel R.R. Jackson in 1878. An article written at the time states,
”Blackburn has had an interesting visitor this week in Mrs Frederick Kerr, of London, daughter of the late Colonel Robert Raynsford Jackson, whose house , Clayton Grange, Wilpshire , was burned down by the rioters during the cotton strikes of 1878. Mrs Kerr understands that after the riots a certain amount of pottery was made , bearing a portrait of her father and a picture of the ruined house, and she is anxious to know if any are still in existence. Mr R. Ashton .Librarian of the borough of whom she made the inquiry has no recollection of any commemorative pottery of this description, but should any readers possess any specimen she would be glad to hear from them. Mrs Kerr says that all the silver plate was destroyed in the fire except for a small portion of plate presented to her father, and bearing n inscription to that effect. She has the impression that this portion was exhibited somewhere and she would be glad to know if anybody can enlighten her on the subject.”
