Firemen Welcome For Prince and Princess 1888

The Fire Brigade’s welcome to the Prince and Princess of Wales on the 9th of May,1888 in Preston New Road opposite Shear Bank Road. The arch of the volunteer and police fire brigade was formed by twofire escape ladders, united at the top by a wooden semicircular structure. Standing on top of the arch was a volunteer fireman whilst on each side at the top of each escape was a police fireman hosepipe in hand. Eighteen firemen including two of the police fire brigade manned the arch. Some reports say that Inspector Fox and sergeant Whittacker  were the police fire brigade contingent.
