Firemen were almost as busy with floods as with flames in Blackburn last year a reminder of a summer most people tried to forget.
The Brigade turned out 414 times 107 more than the previous year state th annual report of the Chief Fire Officer ( Mr J Wilkins).
Calls to “actual ” fire totalled 170 (17 in County districts and three to reinforce other brigades).
Of 154 emergency special service calls, 129 were to pump out flooded mills other premises. The Brigade also rescued adventurous boys from roofs, dogs from culverts and cats from trees or telegraph poles.
Malicious Calls,
It went to 42 chimney fires and answered 42 false alarms nine of which were malicious.
Children playing with matches started 22 fires three more than in 1949 but smokers were more careful. cigarette ends caused eight fires against 17.
Thirty six fires spread from various types of heating units, 19 caused by electrical faults and 16 by defective hearths or flues.
Total damage caused by fire was £120,782. One blaze in premises forming part of Brookhouse Mills accounted for £110,000, states Mr Wilkins. In fighting it 21 firemen were overcome by fumes and one injured by flying glass. That and other fires caused firemen to lose a total of 68 days’ duty because of injuries 37 more than in 1949.
Fire Prevention visits to petroleum stores, schools and places of entertainment totalled 519. New hydrants were installed at Longshaw and other housing estates.
The response to the A.F.S recruiting campaign says Mr Wilkins was “not vey satisfactory”.
