FIREFIGHTERS have tackled a ‘massive’ building fire at a skip firm.
At its height, six fire engines were at the scene battling the flames at the building in Lower Hollin Bank Street, Blackburn.
An environment agency official said the fire involved an industrial unit at 1First Choice Skip Hire Ltd in Kensulat Park.
Two pumps remained at the scene yesterday after the fire at about 10.15pm on Wednesday.
It is expected to take days to put out the fire.
Nearby Hamilton Street was closed while firefighters dealt with the fire.
A fire service spokeswoman said ‘black smoke and plumes were seen all over Blackburn.’
She said: “We were called out to a massive building fire in Lower Hollin Bank Street, Blackburn.
“Six fire engines, two from Blackburn, two from Darwen and one from Great Harwood and one from Accrington were called to the scene.
“The fire broke out at a big industrial unit at about 10.15pm last night.
“It’s still ongoing and it’s expected to take a couple of days to put out the fire.
“Two pumps from Blackburn remain at the scene.
“There were about 30 firefighters at the height of the fire.
“There was black smoke and plumes all over Blackburn.
“A road closure is in place at nearby Hamilton Street.
“A police and fire investigation to establish the cause of the fire is expected to get underway today.”
Damian Hartley, watch manager for Green Watch at Burnley Fire Station said: “We came as a relief crews and were there from the beginning of the fire.
“There were about six fire engines until 2 or 3am this morning and then it was scaled down to two.
“The fire has happened at an industrial unit on Kensulat Park.
“A multi-agency meeting is now taking place to discuss the fire.
“We’re on about getting a digger into the site to cut through some of the waste as there’s quite nasty smoke.”
An eyewitness said: “I was walking down the canal in the morning when I saw the smoke.
“There were quite a few firefighters.”
Another eyewitness said: “I was walking along the canal at 10pm last night and saw nothing.
“But I came back in the morning and saw smoke so I was quite shocked.”
