PEOPLE had to leave their homes after an ‘explosion’ in Blackburn.
Police, firefighters, and the National Grid were called out to the incident on East Park Road, at the junction with Winston Road, after workmen accidentally severed gas and electricity main. Witnesses said the gas pipe leaked and caught fire at 3.30pm yesterday.
The road was closed for several hours whilst the scene was made safe and surrounding houses were left without power.
About 10 to 15 families were evacuated, but allowed back home at 6.30pm when police removed the cordon. Residents were said to have been left ‘terrified’ after hearing the loud explosion.
Shear Brow ward councillor Hussain Akhtar said: “People were ringing me scared. They said there was an explosion and with everything that has been going on in Paris it left them on edge.
“The police and the fire service were on the scene straight away and they should be praised for their fast and effective response. I’m just thankful nobody has been injured.”
Fire crew manager, Don Brady, said: “The builders were doing the front garden and they were removing a stone gate post. They ruptured a gas and electricity main which were running side by side which caused an initial ignition of gas which was out on arrival of the fire service. What we did in conjunction with the police was to evacuate all properties and stand by in case the gas reignited.”
A police spokesman said: “We were called to reports of a burst gas pipe which had caught fire on East Park Road at 3.30pm on Monday. Lancashire Fire Service and the National Grid are taking the lead and we are assisting with traffic control.
“Ten houses were evacuated but there are no reports of any injuries. A road closure has been put in place on East Park Road and surrounding routes.”
