The Bear Hotel 2010
From: ArticlesThese photos and articles explain how the Bear Hotel on Cravens Brow was set on fire.
A FIRE which wrecked a Blackburn hotel is being treated as arson, police said tonight.
Detectives probing the blaze at the Bear Hotel, Cravens Brow, have issued a description of a man seen near the building hours before the fire.
It comes as the manageress told of workers’ heartbreak after the blaze which wrecked the venue at around 4.30am on Sunday.
As police and fire investigators today continued an examination of the scene, detectives said they were treating the fire as intentional.
Detective Inspector Neil Ashton, from Blackburn CID, said: “This is a very complex and difficult crime scene to examine and I understand it will take some considerable time to complete.
“Although I do believe the fire was set intentionally, exactly how and where are still yet to be established.
“Thankfully the blaze did not spread to the accommodation block and the occupants on the night were able to escape unhindered by the fire.”
Mr Ashton said police wanted to speak to a man who was involved in a confrontation with a staff member outside the hotel at around 1.45am on Sunday.
The man is described as being around 5ft 8ins tall and was wearing a dark jacket, dark tracksuit bottoms and dirty white trainers.
He ran down Bolton Road towards Darwen.
Police have also urged a man seen opposite the hotel at the same time to come forward.
Meanwhile, manageress Joan Davey said the damage caused by the fire was ‘so sad’ and told of the terrifying experience for a member of staff, his daughter and guest who were in the building when the blaze broke out.
She said: “All they could hear were the bangs and crashing noises the fire was making.
“For all of us, the fire is heartbreaking.”
